Confidence Isn’t Something You Find. It’s Something You Build.

When I bought my townhouse in Cocoa Beach, one of the things that intimidated me most wasn’t the mortgage or moving across states.

It was the water feature in the backyard.

It’s not really a traditional pond with fish, and it’s not exactly a swimming pool either.

It’s a hybrid.

It has rocks, waterfalls, plants, and natural elements that make it feel like a pond, but it uses chemicals, a filter system, and is maintained more like a pool. It’s a beautiful centerpiece of the backyard, but it’s also something I’ve never had to maintain before.

Every time something went wrong, my first thought was,

“I don’t know what I’m doing.”

Today I removed the ancient filter housing by myself for the first time. I've maintained many pools in my life, but this filter is so old they don't make anything like it today and I was afraid to break it in fear of needing to replace the entire unit.

I was nervous.

I worried I wouldn’t get it back together correctly, it would leak, or I’d break something.

So I took a deep breath, paid attention, and figured it out.

When I turned the pump back on and saw that it wasn’t leaking, I felt something much bigger than relief.

I felt confidence.

Not because I suddenly became an expert. Because I was willing to learn.

It made me realize something. Confidence doesn’t magically appear one morning, it is built one experience at a time.

One mistake. One lesson. One problem solved. One success.

Every week I understand this water feature a little better than I did the week before.

I know a little more about the filter, chemicals, where to look when the water level drops, and what questions to ask.

I’m still learning, but I’m no longer afraid of it.

Not only is this about the pond. It’s about life.

When I started coaching, I wasn’t confident. I analyzed every conversation and wondered if I was asking the right questions.

Now, with every coaching conversation, I learn something new and give people a way to find the next step in the right direction.

I’m becoming more confident.

Not because I’ve mastered coaching. Because I’m willing to keep learning.

The same thing happened after my divorce.

I had never navigated life completely on my own; buying a home, managing repairs, driving five states away by myself, making decisions without someone else’s opinion.

None of it felt comfortable.

Until I did it.

And then I did the next thing. And the next.

Looking back, I think we often wait until we feel confident before taking action.

But life has taught me the opposite. Action creates confidence. Not the other way around.

If you’re waiting until you feel ready…you may be waiting forever.

Instead, choose one thing that feels just slightly outside your comfort zone.

Take one step. Learn one lesson. Gain one little piece of confidence. Then repeat.

Before long, you’ll look back and realize the thing that once intimidated you has simply become part of your life.

Confidence wasn’t hiding somewhere waiting to be discovered.

It was quietly being built every time you chose courage over comfort.

One small step at a time.
